I like visualisations. Long before this site existed I had the habit of opening a tab and just watching the world move: planes over the Atlantic, a storm turning, lightning striking in real time.

These 42 sites are my favourites. None of them is mine and all of them are free. Several do what they do better than this site does anything, and that is why they are here: Observed State does not compete with them; it rests on the same idea —open data, looked at closely— only answering a duller question: whether today is inside its normal range.
